The Drawbacks of Learning NLP

Hello again!

Continuing our Benefits of NLP series with an unexpected TWIST, let’s talk about the DRAWBACKS or disadvantages of learning NLP.

There are drawbacks?
To be perfectly honest, yes there are, and I’m going to be up-front with you about what they are.

The first drawback is Misconception.

The vast majority of people are very uninformed about NLP, and probably have no idea what it is at best, or a lot of strange misconceptions at worst.  This can make it challenging if you want to talk about your skills and knowledge with others.

Although it’s rare, some people have a negative misconception about NLP, viewing it as akin to some kind of evil voodoo mind slave power.  It is, of course, nothing of the sort.  But there are a few people who will be intimidated by what you can do.  If you meet such a person, it may be difficult to convince them of your good intentions, because they are likely to start off in a very contrary state.  Overcoming this kind of targeted prejudice will be easier with your NLP skills than without them, but the difficulty level is likely to be high.

Others will simply not understand, and you are likely to find yourself explaining the basics to people a LOT, and having to find a number of different ways to do it to be effective with different folks.  During your early NLP days, this can actually serve as an easy and safe way to practice structuring your communication to meet the receiver, and improve your skills.

Responsibility

The second drawback is responsibility.  Along with learning how to control your life and your mind, you have to give up COMPLETELY the idea that you don’t have the power to improve your life.  You have to be wiling to accept that your fate is in your own hands, and if it isn’t going the way you’d like, only you have the power to change it.

Of course, the payoff is pretty sweet.  In exchange for abandoning the belief that you aren’t in control, you get to actually BE in control.  You really CAN do whatever you want to do with your life, and go as far as you like in any endeavor you put the effort into.

Of course, other people can still set up obstacles to your success, knowingly or unknowingly.  And you can’t DIRECTLY control other people.  What you CAN do is control how you respond to them, and armed with the understandings of NLP, you will have a vast repertoire of techniques for doing exactly that.

So, what’s the next drawback to learning NLP?

Number three on our list of drawbacks is Perception.  There’s no delicate way to put this.  ‘Learning NLP will forever alter your perception.  It will change the way you understand the world, especially people, by pulling back the curtain of the inner workings of the mind.  Quite simply, you will never see human interactions quite the same way, ever again.

It’s kind of like waking up one day and finding you can fly.

Or like going from watching a magic show, to being a magician.

When you’re watching the show, everything is unexpected, and mysterious.  Each part of the act takes you by surprise, and you’re always a step behind the real action.  Of course, a magic show is fun to watch that way.

When you learn how the act is done, watching the show is fascinating in a completely different way.  Suddenly, you KNOW the mechanics of the tricks, and the emphasis switches to the magician, and what makes his performance of them unique and interesting.  You might know where the card is going to turn up, but instead of being surprised by that, you can be delighted guessing which process of the many at his disposal the magician chooses to accomplish it, and the flavor he brings to the act as a whole.

This can deepen your appreciation for the mind, and for what makes us the same, as well as different.  However, it’s not something you can unlearn, and it’s not something you realize at first until after it happens, or unless someone tells you.

Even with these drawbacks and adjustments, I personally wouldn’t trade my NLP training for anything.  I LIKE being the magician instead of the spectator.  Just takes a little getting used to.
